What Is Golfer’s Elbow?
Golfer’s elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis or medial elbow tendinopathy, is an overuse injury involving the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the inside of the elbow.
These muscles help bend the wrist, rotate the forearm, and maintain grip strength. Repetitive gripping, lifting, throwing, or wrist movements can overload the tendon, leading to pain, weakness, and reduced function.
Despite its name, golfer’s elbow is not limited to golfers. It commonly affects weightlifters, throwing athletes, racquet-sport players, construction workers, mechanics, and anyone who performs repetitive gripping or manual tasks.
Common Symptoms
You may have golfer’s elbow if you experience:
✔ Pain or tenderness on the inside of the elbow
✔ Pain when gripping or squeezing objects
✔ Weakness with lifting or carrying
✔ Pain during golf, throwing, or weight training
✔ Discomfort when bending the wrist
✔ Aching that extends into the forearm
✔ Reduced grip strength
✔ Increased soreness after repetitive work or activity
Common Causes
Golfer’s elbow may develop from:
Repetitive gripping or lifting
Golf
Throwing sports
Weight training
Racquet sports
Construction or manual labor
Frequent use of hand tools
Sudden increases in training or activity
Weakness of the forearm, shoulder, or upper back muscles
Poor lifting, swinging, or throwing mechanics
Our comprehensive evaluation identifies the factors contributing to your elbow pain so treatment addresses the root cause—not just the symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does golfer’s elbow only affect golfers?
No. Golfer’s elbow can affect anyone who performs repetitive gripping, lifting, throwing, or wrist movements. It is common among weightlifters, throwing athletes, construction workers, mechanics, and people who frequently use hand tools.
Should I completely rest my elbow?
Not usually. Temporarily reducing painful activities may help calm symptoms, but complete rest does not rebuild tendon strength. A gradual strengthening program is typically more effective for long-term recovery.
Do I need an MRI?
Most cases of golfer’s elbow can be diagnosed through a physical examination. Imaging may be recommended if symptoms are severe, persistent, or another injury is suspected.
Can I continue exercising?
In many cases, yes. Your workouts may need to be modified temporarily to reduce stress on the tendon. We help you stay active while gradually rebuilding strength and tolerance.
